The Best Fly Fishing is Everywhere - 04.12.2024
Ramblings & Readings, Creativity & Conservation, Happenings & Hope
Dear Friends,
Spring is here in central Oregon - the blooms and the all-over-the-place weather confirm it, in my mind. The fishing has been equally variable, some moments of nearly-unbelievable fishing followed by what would be more appropriately called time-on-the-water, as opposed to fishing. But, it is all good - great, even! Maybe, the best?! Let me know if you’re passing through and want to get out!
Cheers,
Jesse
Fly Fishing by J.R. Hartley & Other Old Books
Old books have a few things on their side that new books do not. Most significantly, they have time and because of this, the old books themselves have the ability to carry with them their own stories.

A Tune
I couldn’t guess how many bands, artists, and songs I’ve been introduced to by KEXP and a recent one is “Groovin’ is Easy” by The Third Mind. Here’s a fun track - a nice, long jam - with Jesse Sykes on vocals and Dave Alvin on lead guitar. Alvin says, “I also love it when people play whatever the hell they want to play at that moment… In general, it’s like, let’s just get into a room, look at each other while we play live, and see what happens.”

I have settled on my favorite notebook: Moleskine’s Original Notebook. There is just so much to like: the pleasing feel of the cover; the satisfying elastic which holds it closed; the integrated page-marker; different sizes and cover colors to choose from; the various paper layouts on which to write; the looks; and, of course, the story behind Moleskine. Every Moleskine notebook is a book yet to be written and a story waiting to be told, they say. My personal favorite: large, soft-cover, and dotted layout.
An Article
When I read Montana-based author, professor, and guide Chris Dombrowski, I find myself asking how the hell did he think to write this? His wordplay is just staggering to me. So when his skills are applied to a subject as vast and skilled as the late author and angler Jim Harrison, something very special results. “The Gospel According to Jim” is an essay that I return to again and again for the perspective on Harrison and the writing by Dombrowski. Enjoy.
A Thought
You’ll probably find
that it suits your book
to be a bit cleverer
than you look.
Observe that the easiest
method by far
is to look a bit stupider
than you are.
